March for Life 2023 in Washington, DC

By Thomas Murawski

Prior to the January 20, 2023 March for Life (MFL), many people were speculating as to the participation, since the June Supreme Court ruling rendered (Dobbs vs Jackson) had overturned Roe vs Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court Decision that made abortion legal in the United States. In fact I have spoken to many people who felt that the MFL scheduled since 1974 should be either canceled at the present date to remember the original decision rendered or rescheduled to June to celebrate the recent Supreme Court decision. Personally, I support keeping the current schedule to let our politicians know that the Pro Life  movement is still active and that we are not going away.

Up until last year, I traveled to the event with a local parish in Queens, which had many parishes sponsoring buses. The pandemic changed that. In 2022, for the first time I traveled with the Diocesan bus leaving from the Diocesan offices in Brooklyn. This year my son and I traveled with the Diocesan bus again since many parishes still were not sponsoring buses, the aftermath of the pandemic. The Diocesan bus had just about all of its seats filled. The 2022 bus went off without any problems, 2023 however would be different. The bus was scheduled to depart at 6:30 AM.  As we waited for the arrival of the bus, the bus captain Deacon John found out that the bus would be delayed since the scheduled driver had called in sick. The bus company scurried to find a replacement driver; however when it arrived over 2 hours late we knew that we would miss the Rally held prior to the MFL.

As our bus got closer to DC some riders were able to stream parts of the Rally. I heard parts of the speech given by current sports broadcaster and former NFL Coach Tony Dungy, the first black coach to win the Super Bowl. Tony and his wife Lauren have adopted eight (8) children, thus demonstrating that there is a market for so called “Unwanted Children” and that adoption is a viable option despite what the Pro Abortion forces say.

I arrived at the rally near its end. I was able to catch the closing prayer given by Franklin Graham, son of the immortal preacher Billy Graham. The attendance at the rally showed no signs of shrinking in the wake of overturning of Roe vs Wade. As I write this article, I have not been able to verify this aspect. However many reports concur that that the crowd showed no signs of shrinking. As I started to march the throng of people showed no signs of losing their enthusiasm for the Pro Life movement. Chants of "hey hey ho ho Roe v Wade has got to go" were replaced with other chants. "No no we don’t need Roe" was one of the chants that replaced that chant.

As I marched I noticed that the crowd, as in the past, was comprised mainly of high school and college aged participants, thus there are no signs that the Pro Life movement is going away anytime soon. As I marched I met participants from numerous states, people had come from Iowa, Illinois, Louisiana, Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee, even West Coast states such as Arizona and California  had participants. I also noticed that the March was not only a national story but was an international story. I saw a large crowd of young people dressed in Canadian garb (the Canadian Maple Leaf which appears on the flag). I met many other marchers from our northern neighbors.

Along the route there were a few Pro Abortion demonstrators present; however they were easily shouted down. It was not just the Canadian presence. As my son and I continued a TV crew from France asked us several questions about the state of abortion in the USA. They asked us about using high tech tools such as facial recognition to prevent residents in states prohibiting abortions from seeking abortions in abortion friendly states such as New York.

This year, for some reason, the route was altered. In past years, the MFL proceeded north of the Capitol past the Capitol and to the Supreme Court where the March ended. This year the MFL passed west in front of the Capitol, then turned south of the Capitol before ending at the Supreme Court. At first my son expressed his disappointment since in past years many marchers (myself included) turned around as we marched up the hill north of the Capitol to see the huge crowd behind us. The south street gave a similar view, I turned around and saw the sea of humanity which had joined me and thousands
of others to let our elected officials know that we are not going away anytime soon. Of course at the Supreme Court there were a few Pro Abortion counter protesters, however they were just a speck that was hardly noticeable.

The trip home presented no special challenges. There are already talks about what lies in store for the 2024 March. As I reminisce about 2022, I see success. Apart from the 2022 overturning of Roe vs Wade, I know that the Pro Abortion efforts to codify abortion on a national level failed. Even though it passed the House in July 2022, its support failed in the Senate. With the House under Republican control, I know that codifying abortion will not happen on a national level. However, I see battles especially here at home in New York.

When I got home my son told my wife that she is missing out by not attending the MFL.  He indicated that he is inspired by the event and wouldn’t miss another one (my wife had never attended the event). My son informed my wife of the many mothers who participated in the event who pushed their strollers along the route each smiling with their precious gifts of life. Along the route we spoke to many of these mothers. I asked one of the toddlers when her birthday was, the child responded April. When I asked as to when her’s brother’s birthday was, the mother informed me it was January 26th, he was born 5 days after she participated in last years’s MFL. It is obvious to me that the Pro Life movement is producing young soldiers who will pick up the fight for years to come.

How do we fight against the Goliath of pornography, transgender, abortion and divorce in our society?  I believe the small stone we need to be wielding to bring the giant tumbling down is fertility education.  Fertility education has been proven to decrease and delay sexual activity among teens, enhance self-respect, empower women’s health and lead couples to happy life-long marriages.

The heart of the pro-life movement is to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The way to do this is to educate about the power of our fertility in a way that enhances human dignity.  I am excited to launch Catholic Fem, a way for teens and adults to learn about hormonal health in line with the teachings of the Catholic faith.

FEMM (Fertility Education + Medical Management) is a revolutionary approach to women's health.  Women of all ages can learn about their fertility and how charting their cycles can gain each woman and couple invaluable information that will last a lifetime.  Mothers and teen daughters, single, engaged, and married women of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend these online or in-person sessions. Do you or someone you know have: irregular cycles? problems with hormonal contraceptives? not sure if they are ovulating or having "normal” cycles? or suffering from PCOS? Do you want your teen to feel empowered and more comfortable with their body and be able to track hormonal health in a way that enables positive and healthy decision making that is based on science and their Catholic values?

Email [email protected] for more information or to schedule an individual appointment.  Please like, share and spread the word about Catholic Fem
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089879918480

Host a group session at your parish, register for an online session, and encourage friends and relatives to learn this invaluable information!

The 13 year old girl in the picture was journeyed on with my team till she gave birth. The work is demanding but with help, support and prayers we shall make it.  We are optimistic that with the needed help and support we can gradually make a difference. Human life is to be highly upheld and respected.

I want to express my profound appreciation to Don Magnotta for his encouragement and support which he has given to the Helpers through his charitable organization, IHM Foundation (www.ihmonline.org). We definitely need more help to go the extra mile in our approach.

Keep us in your prayers and be assured of our prayers, too.

Thank you and stay blessed!

Helpers Vigil, October 2022

By Kevin Moore

On October 29, 2022 the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants gathered in prayer at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Jamaica, New York for Mass, and a rosary procession to promote the dignity of all human life.  The Helpers conduct large prayer vigils monthly, except for July, in various parishes in Brooklyn and Queens. Founded by Msgr. Philip J. Reilly in 1989, the Helpers have sought to convince all they come in contact with that life is indeed a precious gift from God and not an unwanted burden to be destroyed.

The day began with Mass offered by the assistant priest to Fr. Victor Bolanos, the pastor of this parish.  I am sorry I did not catch his name.  He delivered a beautiful homily in both English and Spanish on the necessity of defending life in all circumstances, especially in New York State where abortion is legal up to the moment of birth and for any, or no, reason.  After Mass about 50 people, both Helpers and parishioners led, by Fr. Bolanos, processed to Choices abortion facility praying the rosary and singing hymns.   The procession was peaceful and prayerful and there were no confrontations with the numerous clinic escorts at the facility when we arrived.

There were others from another pro-life group also present who were a bit more confrontational, hoping to sting the consciences of those women who entered the building.  The Helpers rely on God, petitioning the Almighty with prayer to change hearts.

Following the conclusion of the prayers of the rosary we were invited to a delicious breakfast provided by the parish.  It was a beautiful morning, and we noticed that fewer women entered the facility than when we had been there in the past.  Praise be to God!

A Pro-Lifer's Priority

Dear Editor:

To answer the question about pro-lifers not speaking about capital punishment, I offer this brief reply: People on death row do not number in the millions, and these people are not innocent. They have committed heinous crimes.  Yet, they have lawyers who represent them and take them through the lengthy appeals process. There is a voice for them.

The urgency for some of us pro-lifers is for those who have no voice -- who our society claims have no rights, no human status, and where the attack on unborn life is at an all time high. We are not talking about 10, 13, or 25 individuals, we are talking about more than 63 million innocent babies who have committed no crime but to have been conceived.

Today, abortion is praised, financed, and celebrated. Many people claim it is a moral value, a woman's right to which we all  must agree. Thank God, common sense and true human decency motivate pro-lifers' voices to say this is wrong.

If innocent life is not protected, whose life is safe from the whims of others?

Follow the Science

Glendale: Gov. Hochul attempted to disparage candidate Lee Zeldin during the recent debate since he was a co-sponsor of a bill titled Life Begins at Conception. I have news for our esteemed governor, who is a Democrat and whose party is often quoted as saying, "Follow the science." In 2018, law professor Steven Andrew Jacobs of the University of Chicago (far from a right-winger) did a survey among scientists (biologists). The survey revealed that 95% of scientists who responded agreed that human life begins at fertilization (a.k.a. conception). This comes from a group that has many pro-abortionists, atheists, agnostics etc. I guess my governor knows better than these scientists, right?

Procreation

10/24/2022

By Rev. Msgr. Fernando Ferrarese

Sometimes something is so big that we don’t notice it, especially when it has always been there. The issue of procreation is one of those major realities that we often don’t take in completely.

Procreation is the great gift of God in which we can assist Him in creating new eternal beings (i.e. children). If we are indeed made in the image and likeness of God, then we must be creative beings in the manner of God. While we do this through Art and Science, we can preeminently do it through the creation of children, our children. This implies both the beginning of the existence of a new human being as well as the rearing and education of that being through an early life of learning and growth.

God has ordained that this begin with the coming together in desire and ecstasy of two beings that complement each other yet are different: man and woman. Through the mutual exchange of passion and purpose, new life comes forth.

To make sure that this desire is always foremost in the manner of these two types of being created by  God Himself, He made the mutual exchange of essence to be the most pleasurable experience in the life of both beings. And since the rearing of these new beings be done with commitment and painstaking effort, a commitment of permanence would be required of these two very different beings. Hence the need for the mutual and longstanding desire and craving for the other that creates a stable environment for the young ones to grow to maturity.

To give names to this process is now necessary. The two beings are called Male and Female. The process of creation begins with the exchange of essences and the uniting of those essences in what has become known as the sexual union. Furthermore, the commitment necessary to bring this not only to fruition in creating an albeit immature and needy being (a baby) but to educate and help grow to maturity this new being, a new institution named the Sacrament of Matrimony has been established by which the two beings commit themselves to each other and to the new life they have created with the special blessing of God. And so has God ordained this to happen.

But then the deceiver appeared and sin made this process a drama. Because of the intense pleasure that surrounds the act of procreation, this soon became the reason for seeking sexual union. Fornication, adultery, and other acts that are not the will of God, since they do not accomplish the purpose of sexual union, spread like an epidemic. Soon people sought the act merely because it felt good. The responsibility and meaning that God intended were either ignored or openly vilified, as adults attempted the sexual experience with the young who had no idea of the power and the consequences of being used in this way.

Thereby, the act that was meant by God to pass on the gift of life itself became the transmitter of the original sin of disobedience to God committed by our first parents.

This misuse of the pleasure that God has given the act of procreation is so omnipresent in our culture that the pleasure has become the meaning of the act. The exchanges of the essences of a man and a woman in a committed relationship open to God’s will in engendering the creation of new eternal beings has been abandoned by this world as the true meaning of the action. It’s pleasure, which was meant to be a strengthening of the need for the action (based on its importance), has become the central point of the action. This is a twisted misunderstanding of the very nature of the sexual union. By abandoning the procreation of a human being in the essential marital act, the modern mind has corrupted the meaning of this most sacred act and thereby committed a great sin against the purpose of out God in giving us this privilege of engendering life, a life that will live forever.

Hence the Church, through her teaching (most especially in the document Humanae Vitae) has tried to keep the meaning and purpose of the committed marital act intact. Sadly, she has been vilified for this, as is the usual action of the deceiver when confronted with a reassertion of God’s plan.

As the reader can see I have avoided the loaded use of the word s-x. This is the same as the false god that has claimed the lives and meaning of millions of people. The worship of this god is spreading fast throughout the world.

God has placed enormous power into the act itself. It is very attractive and, in the wrong hands, it is very addictive. It is thus the bringer either of true, faithful and responsible love, or of a very real danger. It is like a loaded gun that could either protect oneself and one’s family or, when mixed with anger and violence and nihilistic lack of purpose, it can kill.

The Church has a very exalted view of the marital act. The severity of its sanctions for its misuse is justified given its importance to the future of the world.

Witness for Life, August 6, 2022

By Kevin Moore

It was a bright morning when I stepped off the subway accompanied by my brother-in-law Philip Moore on our way to the Witness for Life held every first Saturday by the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants of Manhattan.  Mass is offered at 8:00 AM at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Nolita (north of Little Italy), usually by Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, leader of the Helpers in Manhattan.  Fr. Fidelis was not able to offer Mass that morning as he had just been incarcerated for participating in a Red Rose Rescue in Westchester County.

When Philip and I arrived, protestors from Abortion Rights for NYC were already outside the church and we came in through the back door of the church.  We could hear the protestors while Mass was being celebrated by Bishop Peter Byrne, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Following Mass, one of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal told us that the rosary procession to Planned Parenthood would not be able to take place as the police had informed him that the protestors were too numerous for the police to guarantee our safety.  Father told us that we could pray the rosary in front of the exposed Blessed Sacrament, or if anyone wished, they could walk to Planned Parenthood in twos and threes to pray there.  Phil and I, being a bit long in the tooth, decided to stay in the church.  Most of the younger people there went to pray at the abortion facility.

The yelling and screaming from the pro-abortion protestors got louder and louder as we continued to pray, led by Bishop Byrne.  When we finished praying the rosary, Benediction was held, and we were then invited for coffee and bagels at the nearby Youth Center of Old St. Patrick’s. As Phil and I left the church the protestors were yelling epithets vociferously, calling us Nazis and other unlovely names.  We did not venture out on the sidewalk but cut through the cemetery on the grounds of Old St. Patrick’s, as the only thing separating us from the protestors were a few police officers and an iron gate.

As we enjoyed a bite to eat and some coffee, we could still hear the protestors outside.  One of the sidewalk counselors got up to speak and informed us that two women had turned around and decided to keep their babies while we were praying in church.  We were all elated by this news.  We later found out that five of the protestors had been arrested by the police, and one of the Friars was accosted by protestors while he was trying to get into his car.  When Phil and I left, the protestors were still outside the Youth Center, and we were advised to us the side streets to get to our subway to head for home.

The Friars have asked us to invite others to come to these first Saturday vigils for life, as the more pro-lifers there are the easier it will be for the police to escort us.  I would like to invite everyone reading this blog to come to the next vigil on September 3, 2022, beginning with Mass at 8:00AM.

Mourning the Deaths of Children

7/25/2022

Dear Editor:

Little by little, we are being informed of all that happened in the tragic deaths of 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas.

We grieve the loss of life, especially of innocent life, and we do so with moral outrage.
Each detail of this horrific event compounds our disbelief that we humans can be so depraved.
Our whole country rightfully grieves the death of these children and the agony of their families.
What about the unborn — the most innocent? Who protects them? Their deaths are equally barbaric. Where are those who mourn their deaths?

The Sexual Revolution is Still With Us

7/15/2022

By Madeleine Santangelo-Palumbo

For fifty years women have been taught that to achieve full equality with men they must be free to be sexually active. Movie, TV, celebrities and the media have portrayed sex and drugs as socially acceptable and a lot of fun.

Since Roe v. Wade more than 63 million babies in the U. S. have been aborted. They weren’t all because of unplanned pregnancies or because the women couldn’t afford to raise a child. Many women have had more than one abortion because it was legal, acceptable, available, and it can be used as a form of birth control. Many mothers have taken, encouraged and allowed their teenage daughters to abort their future grandchild because they didn’t want the burden of raising their grandchild.

Unfortunately, I and other members of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants have witnessed this while we prayed and tried to counsel women entering an abortion facility. With the help of God we did save some beautiful teenage mothers and their babies.

Where were the Democratic Catholics when it came to vote for the candidates that stood for Pro-life issues that were with a different party? So many Catholics, including some religious, think of the Pro-life platform as only one issue and not the primary one.

Since Woodstock, HIV, Bill Clinton’s behavior with his young intern, young people have been taught that having experiences with sex, alcohol and drugs are all a part of being young. There should have been many more homilies over the course of years focused on the need to help young people choose to respect young women and for young women to respect their bodies; and also to uphold the value and respect for fatherhood. Parents should have been openly addressing, in simple language, these issues to help their children stay away from all the social vices.

It hasn’t been easy because we live in a society that has accepted, as the old song states, “. . . Anything goes,” but it isn’t too late. With the help of God, we all can fight the “Culture of Death.”

Witness for Life Disrupted by Protestors

6/12/2022

On June 4, 2022 I attended the monthly prayer vigil at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral in Lower Manhattan.  We began with Mass offered by Fr. Fidelis Moscinski of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

In his homily Fr. Moschinski noted that at the end days of the Roman Empire, St. Augustine wrote that people would have a choice of serving God or serving themselves, and that those who chose to serve God would be persecuted because those who chose otherwise would not want to hear anything that the people of God would say to them.  Fr. went on to say that we are facing the same problem today.

Fr. Moscinski was certainly correct.  After Mass ended, pray-ers were met by a  chorus of cat calls and shouts from pro-abortion protesters who refused to let Fr. Moscinski and the rest of us get by them, even with the escort of the police.  Unlike the month previous, there were many more police officers to help us, but the protesters moved very, very slowly preventing us from making much progress.  The police sent out a warning that those disrupting the procession would be subject to arrest, but no one was actually arrested.  We continued to pray the rosary as these disturbances were ongoing, and we have prayed the Joyful, Luminous, and most of the Sorrowful mysteries before we were able to reach Planned Parenthood.

The protesters continued to try and harass us, but the police moved them to a sidewalk on the next block.  Sidewalk counselors and a few pray-ers were sent ahead by Fr. Moscinski so that there would be a Helpers presence while the protesters were trying to prevent us from gaining access to Planned Parenthood.

We returned to church for Benediction, followed by the protesters, who continued to yell and scream at us.  The good news is that only a few people entered the Planned Parenthood facility while we were there.  It is a difficult enough decision to make concerning the life of your child without 50 to 75 people screaming all around you.  Planned Parenthood has repeatedly asked these protesters to stop, but they have refused.  I suspect Fr. Moscinski was inwardly smiling while he was being harassed and prevented from exercising his constitutional rights.

A Pro-Life Legacy

The following speech was given at the 147th Anniversary Lincoln Dinner, Queens Village Republican Club, on March 20, 2022 .

I want to thank the Queens Village Republican Club for making me a recipient of the Sanctity of Life Award. Sanctity means to make holy, to consecrate, to make free from sin, to purify. With this in mind we must teach, preach and pray in a loud voice that life is sacred and good for all -- from womb to tomb.

When the infamous Roe v. Wade decision was first imposed on the American people in 1973 abortion seemed irreversible!  The abortion movement was dancing with the so-called Sexual Revolution of the Sixties which flipped morality upside down. The media helped spread the idea that everyone supported abortion on demand. Abortion became an industry with tens of millions of dollars. Modern biology, genetics, sonograms, common sense and decency all tell us that a baby in the womb has just as much right to live as the rest of us; and is just as much a ‘person.’ The Democratic Party is very pro-choice. They didn’t support the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act. They don’t acknowledge the fact that since Roe v. Wade there have been 60 million abortions.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn and I obtained all my three degrees at night while working. Since 1966 my teaching experience spanned all levels of education: Catholic elementary schools, Catholic high school, Long Island University, C. W. Post, and St. John’s University outreach programs. Although I was an educator for 44 years I have been inspired, motivated and invigorated by being a member for 25 years of the Joint Parish Respect Life Committee, founded by Dr. Florence Maloney who did outstanding work responding to current legislative, political and cultural battles.

In the past Dr. Maloney received awards from the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Queens Village Republican Club. She implemented the Catholic Speaker Series held throughout Queens. Many letters, petitions and visits were presented to NY elected officials and candidates and the media. She established the publication, Respect Life News, which has been succeeded by the Joint Parish Respect Life Committee website.

Florence’s memory is not perfect right now; but our memory of her strong leadership will live on for years and is carried on today by the president, Thomas Murawski, and by myself as vice-president, and all the pro-life members.

In 1986 I began teaching at Bishop Kearney High School. For years I had traveled by bus to the annual March for Life in Washington, DC and now I wanted to take some of the students to represent Brooklyn. I was granted permission to establish a Celebrate Life Club. Being an Art and English teacher, I co-moderated with a wonderful Catholic Studies and History teacher, Patricia Gregoric. Each year we attended the March with more than 40 active club members. I attended the 49th annual march this year with Cathy Donohoe, the president of Bridge to Life, and Patricia  – and we hope it will be the last!

Our Celebrate Life Club engaged in many projects, fund raisings and petitions. We took action to stop the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act and educated the community about the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). Our club was selected to partake in the Youth and the Future of the Pro-Life Movement Conference held at Nassau Community College. We entered the Culture of Life speech contest sponsored by the Brooklyn Diocese and the New York State Right to Life Committee. I am proud to say our students won monetary prizes and one of them received a full scholarship to Yale; and in the first year started a Celebrate Life club of her own!

As an active member of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, founded in 1987 by Msgr. Philip Reilly, I was able to invite him to speak at the school where he gave an inspirational speech on the “culture of life.” Some of our students visited Monsignor at the Monastery of the Precious Blood in Brooklyn and were given a grand tour. Msgr. Reilly’s niece Susan Moore and her husband, Kevin, are carrying on his great work.

Another guest speaker was Rebecca Kiessling, an attorney and author who was conceived in rape. She is the face of the “rape exception.” Our students experienced meaningful time focusing on vital pro-life issues so that in the future they will take a political candidate’s position on life issues into account when they vote.

Early on Saturday mornings for years I stand with the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants outside the All Women’s Medical Pavilion on Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens. We pray, display posters, and try in a friendly, peaceful manner to counsel women approaching the abortion facility; and even the men who may be escorting them. The HGPI is a movement to save babies by saving their mothers.

Over the course of years unexpected “miracles” have happened. Our star sidewalk counselor, Donald Magnotta, has been fortunate to actually dialogue with an abortion doctor and some staff, which resulted in four of them quitting their jobs. More miracle turnarounds have happened: two beautiful high school teenagers, at different times, were reluctant to enter the facility but, after viewing our booklets, seeing our posters, hearing our prayers and speaking to Donald, we learned that they both had very difficult situations.

On those two different Saturdays I drove the young woman and her mother to the Life Center in Brooklyn and made arrangements to get baby supplies and temporary financial aid; and then we traveled to Manhattan and met with the Sisters of Life. Over the years, eight to be exact, these two young women were helped with jobs, apartments, baby supplies, furniture, etc.

With financial help and support from Donald we held a baby shower and visited them both in the hospital where they gave birth. Father Robert Czok baptized one of the babies. Both women are now married and have helped other young women to keep their babies.

I am a board member, representing Queens, on the New York State Respect Life Committee which is an affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee. It keeps New Yorkers informed on the life issues and educates them on who the pro-life candidates are and the vital importance of their vote. It also conducts Public Policy Days in Albany, conferences and many other activities.

For years I have been one of the facilitators for a program called Rachel’s Helpers – Forgiven and Set Free. It helps support post-abortion women through Bible study, prayer, reflections, and supported discussions. It has helped many women to be free from the bondage of guilt and grief that follows an abortion. These are courageous women who have chosen to face the hurts of their past. Confidentiality and trust enables these women to begin their journey toward healing of mind and spirit.

I have been a campaign volunteer for the honorable New York City councilwoman, Vickie Paladino. She is a strong dynamic voice for us. God bless her!

I will be attending the International Gift of Life Walk, held in Lower Manhattan, on March 25 and sponsored by Personhood Education NY whose leader is Dawn Eskew. Many supporters are present today, including Phil McManus, vice president.

As an artist my artwork is a microcosm of my life as a teacher, mother, wife, and  grandmother, which has helped me in my pro-life testimony and social concerns.

Creating a World Where No Student Must Choose Between Their Child and Their Education

The Kathleen Mullally Foundation is a scholarship foundation committed to creating a society where no one feels they must choose between their children and their education. We provide a monetary grant scholarship for a pregnant or parenting students to further that vision.

The Foundation is dedicated to upholding every individual's inalienable right to life. We also acknowledge that our current society does not offer many support systems for students who encounter a conflict between upholding that value and pursuing their higher education. This scholarship is meant to provide students just such a support system in the form of a monetary grant. We especially encourage matriculated Queens College Students to apply.

I established the Foundation in 2020 to honor my dear aunt because of her great love and devotion for her many nieces and nephews.

The first recipient of the scholarship was Malika Pegues in July 2021. Malika is a Psycho-Neurobiology & Therapeutic Recreation Major at Queens College, CUNY. She attended online classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic from a domestic violence shelter while taking care of her three daughters. Malika is now a crisis counselor, and plans on completing her PhD in psychology.

See more information on applying for a scholarship and donating to the Foundation.

Fr. Mann celebrates Mass for the Helpers of God's Precious Infants, St. Mary Church, Long Island City, November 20, 2021.
By Boris Musich

Fr. Frank Mann of the Brooklyn Diocese has an unusual ministry: he seeks to serve the artists community in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick. Over the years he has been instrumental in guiding young women experiencing troubled pregnancies who were considering abortion to give birth to their babies.

    How did it all start?

Fr. Mann, who dabbles in art, had a studio in the same building as other artists in the neighborhood. One day, while sitting at his laptop in a coffee shop he overheard 2 women talking: one of them was saying that her boyfriend was trying to force her to have an abortion. Fr. Mann then introduced himself and counseled the young woman not to have the abortion. Word spread that Father offered a listening ear and he was able to intervene in over 30 similar situations over the course of the past 5 years.

Many of the artists were from out of the City but migrated to the street art and gallery atmosphere in Bushwick. Some were addicted to drugs and needed addiction counseling. The COVID-19 pandemic made life harder as many artists lost their day jobs or gallery spaces and moved back home, many back to the Midwest.

Several times Fr. Mann was called to talk to would-be suicides and was able to talk them out of it. Once a young woman was sitting on a rooftop ledge: she wanted Father to sit on the ledge with her but he said, ‘No way,’ since he is afraid of heights. Instead he said, “Give me your hand,’ and was able to bring her to safety.

From a young age, Fr. Mann has cared about animals and is now an ardent animal welfare advocate. He tries to stir the flame of caring and compassion in whatever way he can. Even though most of the artists and their friends are not overtly religious they do have a sense of the sacred and have compassion for other people and for animals.

Fr. Mann is also a big fan of Albert Schweitzer, the physician, philosopher and humanitarian who spent his life healing the sick in Africa. Schweitzer, who believed that a society crumbles when it loses a respect for life, has been a big influence in his life.

One of Fr. Mann’s current projects is a children’s book he’s written called, ‘The Wounded Butterfly,’ which is about a boy who befriends a caterpillar that inevitably turns into a butterfly. It speaks of a wonder at the beauty of all creation and seeks to engender a sense of the sacredness of life among its young readers. He hopes to find a publisher soon.

 By Patricia Gregorek

On Thursday, January 20, 2022, Catherine Donohoe, Kate McNally, Madeleine Santangelo-Palumbo and Pat Gregorek drove to Washington, DC to participate in the 49th annual March for Life and other pro-life activities.  That afternoon in our hotel, The Renaissance, we attended several panel discussions during the annual Life and Law Summit. Fr. Frank Pavone opened the session with prayer.  Attorneys from St. Thomas More Society talked about pro-life cases won or still pending. They also explained what would be necessary to overturn Roe.

Lauren Muzyka, and other members of Sidewalk Advocates explained how they offer training and support for persons who feel called to stand in front of their local abortion facility and offer real help. Missy Stone spoke about a new pro-life organization, Reprotection, which helps individuals identify health violations at abortion facilities and provide strategies to shut them down. This stops abortions and the medical harm done to women. Reprotection has already closed 20 abortion facilities.

Thursday night we attended one of the first fundraisers of the weekend, The Vans for Life Dinner, held at the Trump Hotel. The goal of the event was to raise money for sonogram vans.  At present, there are some vans stationed near abortion facilities where women can get free ultrasounds. This has had a tremendous impact on some women and they kept their babies. The success of this caused several abortion facilities to close and it is hoped that money raised could expand the fleet. Tim Tebow was the guest speaker. His mixture of gospel, football stories and pro-life exhortation made for humor and seriousness about being pro-life advocates.

Friday morning, we attended a traditional Latin Mass in our hotel celebrated by Benedictine monks from New Mexico. It was different from Mass as we know it, but the sound of the Gregorian Chant was lovely.  Then it was off for some downtime to prepare ourselves for the day‘s main event, the March for Life. We dressed in warm clothes and, wrapped in scarves, hats and gloves, braved the 20-something degree cold.  We walked to the start of the March to meet up with the Students for Life of America. Father Pavone was there to bless the marchers and we had some time to speak with him. Cathy and Madeleine were interviewed by Reuters. Those who enthusiastically, peacefully and prayerfully marched came from all over the country and many international marchers joined in -- some 50,000 to 100,000 strong.

The evening’s event included a trip to the Omni Hotel which was headquarters for the Students for Life who were hosting a weekend-long training summit. Throughout the weekend there were interesting workshops for the students on chemical abortions, how to protect your pro-life group on campus, the human dignity debate, serving women and saving lives, etc. The presentations were from The Heritage Foundation, Alliance Defending Freedom, Human Coalition, and Center for Academic Freedom, to name a few.

We had dinner with some of the students and Cathy met up with a member of her Bridge to Life board of directors, Kate Maloney, and with Norvilia Etienne, both now working for SFLA.  We listened to brief talks by some of the student leaders and later that evening attended a private showing of the film, Life Mark, which will open in theaters later this year. It’s a great film inspired by a true story. Please go see it.

Back at our hotel we sat in the lounge and chatted about the events of the day. We saw guests leaving the Rose Dinner Gala, a major fundraiser for the march. We talked with Rebecca Kiessling, from Remember the One, and Cathy introduced us to Michele Sterlace-Accorsi from Feminists Choosing Life of New York.

Saturday we were lucky to have sunny skies for a safe drive back to New York. How could one pass up the opportunity to have breakfast at Cracker Barrel? So we didn’t. On the whole, the weekend was very positive, life affirming and educational as we learned many new ways for promoting life. It was also very gratifying to see the actions of Students for Life. We left seeing that the pro-life message is in good hands.

Fr. Hesse with other pro-life prayer warriors outside abortion facility in Kew Gardens, Queens.
By Boris Musich

Fr. Peter Hesse was visiting the United States for the summer from his home country, Ghana. He is very interested in expanding the pro-life movement in the Accra Archdiocese so wanted to see what the American pro-lifers were doing.

Don Magnotta, a member of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, took Fr. Peter to various pro-live events and organizations in the New York City area, including a 40 Days for Life vigil in Hempstead and a Helpers prayer group that meets on Saturdays mornings in front of All Women’s Medical Pavilion abortion facility, in Kew Gardens (photo).

On his return to the Accra Archdiocese, Fr. Peter will undertake to start a Pro-Life Support Group at the 3 major hospitals he directs. Although abortion is illegal in Ghana, it is practiced behind the scenes.

Don has helped build a clinic in the archdiocese through a charity that he directs, International Help of Missionaries (IHM), and will also assist Fr. Peter in his pro-life work. If you would like to donate to Fr. Peter’s work please go to the IHM site.

This is what Fr. Peter said about the huge task that awaits him in his country:

"Concerning the Pro-Life Support Group which I am about to start officially, I must say this stems out of a great passion illumined by the power of the hospital and highly motivated by Don when I met him. Don of IHM has been of a tremendous support in helping us in our Archdiocese to build a clinic. We are not yet done with the project because of funds but we keep praying.

Although, I am yet to officially launch the Pro-Life Support Group, I have started doing something already. Thanks be to God I have 2 persons who will help in counseling. Currently, I have a youngster who after childbirth, abandoned the baby and left it the hospital. Actually, I am the Director in charge of three big hospitals in the archdiocese so I have asked that one nurse should take full custody of the baby till I get back home. This will really entail a lot since I must search for the mother or her relatives. If I am not able to find any clue, I have no choice other than to continue to take care of the baby by officially handing it to a group of nuns who run an orphanage — then I pay for the bills, feeding, and upkeep . . . .

The Pro-Life Support Group will have target groups such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and schools. There are high rates of abortion in both secondary schools and colleges so I need to really lace my boots and get out there to work . . . . This really involves a lot, but come what may, I am ever-determined because life must be PROTECTED AND THE DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE should be respected.

Stay blessed, keep me in your prayers as I do same for you. Regards to the entire team and please thank Don for all his support and motivation."

Best regards,
Fr. Peter

Meet the New Abortion Boss: The Devil’s Disciple

10/9/2021

By Alice Lemos

If pro-lifers in New York believe that the new governor, Kathy Hochul, will have a more benevolent attitude towards them – and to babies – than Andrew Cuomo, they are sadly mistaken. She will continue his pro- abortion agenda, and since she is a woman, the media will cover for her even more.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently addressed a predominantly black congregation in Brooklyn where she told them that God had wanted them to be vaccinated and that they should be her “disciples” to spread the pro Covid vaccination plan and that they were “doing God’s work”. It appears that the same God that told her to preach to the converted did not communicate with her about the fate of hundreds of thousands of babies facing death thanks to New York’s extremely liberal abortion law – a law that she helped to promulgate and wants implemented in all fifty states! There was a time when NewYork’s pro-lifers – with the help of the State Senate which was in the hands of the GOP for years and a small group of more moderate Democrats - were able to stop the most radical pro-abortion legislation that Andrew Cuomo, raised a Catholic, was ready, willing and able to propose.

I am referring to the Reproductive Health Act, which the former governor finally was able to sign into law on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade after the GOP had lost control of the State Senate (proving, once again, that elections have consequences). Cuomo celebrated by lighting up the Empire State Building in Planned Parenthood pink–which is also the color of breast cancer awareness and of course, baby girls! RHA essentially removes any and all protections for pre-born infants and even allows for abortions on a baby’s delivery date. Since New York has one of the highest rates of abortion in the United States, this bill was totally unnecessary and even removes elementary protections for pregnant women abused by boyfriends who end up with a dead baby because of such abuse. An unborn baby, killed in the commission of a crime, can no longer be considered a victim of that crime thanks to Cuomo and his merry band of abortion supporters.

Any restrictions on late term abortion involve the abortionist’s contemplation of the woman’s “life and health” – with no objective definition of either. There are, in essence, no meaningful restrictions on abortion in New York State thanks to RHA, its supporters in the Democrat party and Cuomo – who has yet to be excommunicated. RHA even removes protections for an infant born alive during an abortion.

RHA considers abortion to be a “fundamental right” and there is the justified fear that it could even criminalize being pro-life. In New York State, under Cuomo, the pro-abortion absolutists have won. Cuomo in 2014 even stated that “pro lifers have no place in New York because that is not who we are.”

As everyone knows, Cuomo was forced to step down as governor after harassing dozens of women. He also sentenced the elderly to death in his Covid-19 infected nursing homes and even concealed the true number of dead while having his staff ghost write the book “Crisis”– in mid-Covid crisis. His “book” was essentially a tribute to his “managerial skills” while he was killing off thousands of New York’s Medicare patients and disabled! He has yet to apologize and it seems he will keep the ill-gotten gains of his book’s revenues.

Now we have Kathy Hochul, who is also Catholic, as Governor of New York. Hochul is as radical as Cuomo is on abortion and unlike the growling former governor, does her abortion advocacy with a smile. Hochul’s reaction to the commonsense Texas heartbeat bill is to state that NewYork is a “safe harbor for those seeking abortions” and has advocated for chemical abortions to be performed with the aid of video conferences. She also seems unaware that Texas women still have access to Plan B which can be bought over the counter. She has demanded that Facebook remove any and all references to chemical abortion reversal and wants New York to be the mecca of abortion tourism for women in Texas and other states. Meet the New Abortion Boss – she may be worse than the old one and even more dangerous.

9/11 Memorial to the Unborn – Are Remembered

There are nearly 3,000 names inscribed in the bronze panels surrounding the two huge memorial pools at the 9/11 Memorial. Among them are 11 instances where a woman’s name is followed by “AND HER UNBORN CHILD”: a testament to the reality and sanctity of life in the womb.

No Masks for the Unborn

7/22/2021

 By Madeleine Santangelo-Palumbo

Early Saturday morning we witness as members of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants outside a Queens abortion facility on Queens Boulevard. As we pray and make an attempt to give women a pamphlet filled with helpful information, we observe an attractive young-looking grandmother wearing a mask as she escorts her 16-year-old attractive young mask-wearing daughter to kill her grandchild.

One of the counselors managed to speak to the grandmother and she said that this was very hard for her because years ago she had aborted her baby at age 16 and she suffers with regret for doing that till this day. She wasn’t going to stop her daughter because she said it’s her choice!

The counselor tried to tell her that you can redeem yourself by stopping your daughter from killing her unborn baby. He stated that you are only teaching your daughter to use abortion as a form of birth control and not to choose “Life” for the unborn person which would be your beautiful grandchild. The counselor quickly showed her pictures on his cell phone of a young mother with her beautiful child of six years old who was saved from abortion at this facility.

Unfortunately, the masked young mother went into the abortion facility. It’s very hard to stand outside and peacefully pray for all that enter the chamber of death.

We have been protecting ourselves by wearing masks, keeping the right distance and getting tested. Why aren’t we all concerned with protecting all the unborn infants from death? So many of us are upset about how Governor Cuomo handled the COVID-19 outbreak in nursing homes that killed a great number of senior residents. Why aren’t we all concerned that Governor Cuomo, a Catholic, is pro-choice – which is pro-abortion and pro-end of life/assisted suicide?  Why do Catholics vote for him? Why aren’t there more advertisements about protecting the unborn, helping mothers to keep their babies of for them to consider adoption over abortion?

Let us pray that while we protect ourselves and others, we should teach our young people to be concerned for all God’s precious creatures and our beautiful earth, but most of all to protect and save the unmasked pre-born infants from abortion.

Note to AISH -- Please Don't Be Blasé About Abortion

7/5/2021

By Alice Lemos

Imagine my horror and discomfort – coming so shortly after the collapse of a condominium in Miami where so many Jewish lives have been lost – at reading “My Choice” by Sara Shamansky (republished by the Jewish AISH from The Tablet) in which Shamansky, who claims to be an “Orthodox Jew” willingly goes through an abortion because her baby has been diagnosed as having a birth defect (by the way, she does not go into detail as to what that defect could specifically be – what matters to her is that her supposedly “much wanted child” would have problems which she simply cannot deal with – even if the problems could be corrected or lessened through post natal surgery.) She admits that, although she claims to be religious, that “It [abortion] wasn’t that I was against abortion per se . . . but now, suddenly, it was immediately relevant, part of my world.”

    How “modern” – how “unorthodox”!

Yes, that is the solution to a baby who might have disabilities. Rather than reach into her heart for the love she claims she felt for her unborn child, she searched for a rabbi to tell her what she wanted to hear: one that would tell her that “it was our choice, it was our decision to make.” As for her husband, the father of the baby, he is spineless and actually tells her that IT IS HER DECISION TO MAKE! So much for the importance of fathers.

If you want to know why the world is upside down look at Sara Shamansky and her hapless husband: instead of seeking treatment for their baby, they took what they saw as the “humane” or “easy” way out. Shamansky actually writes that she was “afraid of hospital stays and surgeries . . . of never being free.” There you have it: a woman who claims to be religious who gives into her selfish instincts. She also claims that she “does not want to be judged”. Then why did she write this article? He who excuses himself, accuses himself as the French say. She nauseates me. And yes, I am being judgmental since she put it out there. And I think of the young woman with Downs Syndrome whom I heard speak at a conference sponsored by the Sister of Life and then I think of the Shamansky woman and the fraud that she is. As for AISH, which has published her article several times, they should change their name to “Tone Deaf”.
